Green Card insurance is the international motor liability document used when a vehicle may cause damage to third parties in another country. For a foreign-plated vehicle driving to Türkiye, it is an important document — but having a Green Card does not mean that every risk is automatically covered.
This guide explains what the Green Card does, what to check before entering Türkiye, and how it differs from compulsory traffic insurance, kasko, extended liability and roadside assistance.
Role notice: Gurbet Kasko is a service brand used by Özhedef Sigorta Aracılık Hizmetleri Limited Şirketi for insurance agency application services aimed at foreign-plated vehicles. Gurbet Kasko and Özhedef Sigorta Aracılık Hizmetleri are not insurance companies, do not provide insurance cover and do not carry insurance risk. Özhedef Sigorta Aracılık Hizmetleri acts as an insurance agency registered with the TOBB Insurance Agencies Registry and intermediates information, quote collection and policy issuance processes. Scope of cover, premium, start date and validity conditions are determined by the policy and special policy terms issued by the relevant insurance company.
What does the Green Card do?
The Green Card system helps a vehicle’s motor liability insurance be recognised in countries that are part of the system. Its main purpose is to address third-party losses under the compulsory motor liability rules, scope and limits of the country where the accident occurs.
The key point is that the Green Card mainly concerns damage caused to others. Damage to your own vehicle must be reviewed separately under kasko or other cover terms.
Is the Green Card automatically and unlimitedly valid in Türkiye?
No. Its validity for Türkiye depends on the country scope shown on the document, start and end dates, vehicle details, policy terms, limits and applicable rules. Check whether the international country code TR is crossed out and whether the validity dates cover your stay in Türkiye.
Green Card, traffic insurance, kasko and extended liability
- Green Card: the international liability insurance document and country-scope mechanism.
- Compulsory traffic insurance: concerns third-party losses in Türkiye within policy limits and terms.
- Kasko: optional own-vehicle damage cover, subject to insurer acceptance and policy terms.
- Extended liability: when included in the policy, may be assessed as an additional financial-liability heading for third-party losses that exceed compulsory traffic insurance limits. Limits, scope, exclusions and conditions are determined by the policy.
- Roadside assistance: towing, recovery or guidance services depending on the policy or service package.
What to check before driving to Türkiye
- Whether Türkiye is included in the country scope.
- The start and end dates of the document.
- Plate, VIN/chassis number, make/type and registration country.
- Which loss types and limits apply.
- Which insurer or representative channel to contact after a claim.
- Whether own-vehicle damage, roadside assistance or additional liability requires separate cover.
If there is no Green Card, or if its scope is not enough
If the document does not include Türkiye, has expired, or is not suitable for your travel plan, you may need Türkiye-valid liability insurance. The right path depends on the plate country, entry/stay status, vehicle details and insurer acceptance criteria.
Does submitting a form mean cover has started?
No. Sending information through a form or contact channel is only a quote request. It does not issue a policy and does not provide cover by itself. Cover starts only when the insurer issues the policy and the policy’s effective conditions are met.
How does Gurbet Kasko help?
Gurbet Kasko helps foreign-plated vehicle owners separate Green Card, compulsory traffic insurance, kasko, extended liability and roadside assistance needs, organise application information and support quote/policy processes with insurers for which Özhedef Sigorta Aracılık Hizmetleri acts as an agency.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Green Card cover damage to my own vehicle?
Generally, it concerns third-party losses. Damage to your own vehicle must be assessed separately under kasko or other cover terms.
Is the Green Card always valid in Türkiye?
No. Country scope, dates, vehicle details, limits and applicable rules must be checked. Türkiye should be clearly included on the document.
If I have a Green Card, do I still need kasko?
They answer different needs. Kasko should be assessed separately for damage to your own vehicle.
Does the form start cover?
No. The form is only a quote request. A quote request, payment step or information form alone does not mean that a policy has been issued or that cover has started. Cover starts only after policy issuance and fulfilment of the policy’s effective conditions.
Is Gurbet Kasko an insurance company?
No. Gurbet Kasko is a service brand used by Özhedef Sigorta Aracılık Hizmetleri Limited Şirketi. Özhedef Sigorta Aracılık Hizmetleri acts as a TOBB-registered insurance agency; Gurbet Kasko and Özhedef Sigorta Aracılık Hizmetleri are not insurance companies and do not provide insurance cover.
Official framework and source check
When assessing Green Card validity in Türkiye, country codes, start/end dates, plate/chassis details, issuing insurer and the compulsory motor liability rules of the country where the accident occurs should be read together. This article is for general information; Green Card system, current practice and claims processes should be checked from official authority and document records.

In short: the Green Card is an important document to check before driving to Türkiye with a foreign-plated vehicle, but it should not be assumed to automatically replace kasko, extended liability or roadside assistance needs. A quote request, payment step or information form alone does not mean that a policy has been issued or that cover has started.
