Insurance for a foreign-plated vehicle in Türkiye is not a single automatic step. The product type, document status, vehicle details and insurer acceptance criteria are assessed together before a quote or policy can be issued.

This guide explains how the application usually moves forward, which documents matter, and how compulsory traffic insurance, kasko, extended liability, the Green Card and roadside assistance differ.

1. The need is classified first

  • Compulsory traffic insurance: third-party losses within policy limits and terms.
  • Kasko: optional own-vehicle damage cover, subject to insurer acceptance and policy terms.
  • Extended liability: when included in the policy, it may be assessed as an additional financial-liability heading for third-party losses that exceed compulsory traffic insurance limits. Limits, scope, exclusions and conditions are determined by the policy.
  • Green Card: international liability document and country-scope mechanism; Türkiye must be checked on the document.
  • Roadside assistance: towing, recovery or guidance services depending on the policy or service package.

2. Vehicle and user details are prepared

Registration document, plate, VIN/chassis number, make, model, type, model year, usage type, registration country, Türkiye entry/stay plan and contact details should be prepared accurately. Missing or conflicting details can slow the quote process.

Foreign vehicle make/type information may not match Turkish insurance catalogues exactly. If there is no exact match, the insurer may use the closest equivalent vehicle definition in its own system.

3. Green Card and existing policy are checked

If the vehicle already has a Green Card or foreign policy, check whether Türkiye is included, the dates, limits, vehicle details and claim/contact channel. The international country code TR must not be crossed out, and the validity dates should cover the vehicle’s stay in Türkiye. A Green Card does not automatically remove the need for kasko, roadside assistance or extended liability.

4. A quote request is created

Information sent through a form or contact channel is used to prepare a quote request for insurer assessment. Sending the form does not issue a policy and does not start cover by itself.

5. Quote, vehicle definition and policy terms are reviewed

Before policy issuance, product type, limits, exclusions, deductibles, vehicle definition, payment terms, geographical scope and start date should be checked.

6. Approval and payment steps are completed

Policy issuance depends on required approval and process steps. Do not share card or payment details over WhatsApp or email; wait for secure payment steps.

Official framework and source check

When assessing insurance applications for foreign-plated vehicles, Türkiye-valid liability insurance need, Green Card scope, vehicle details, agency registry, current limits and the relevant insurer’s acceptance/policy terms should be checked together. This article is for general information; official authority records should be used for current practice, limits, documents and application routes.

Frequently asked questions

Can the application be started online?

The application and quote request can be started online. Policy issuance still depends on insurer acceptance, document checks, payment and policy steps. A quote request, payment step or information form alone does not mean that a policy has been issued or that cover has started.

Does the form start cover?

No. The form is only a quote request. Cover starts only when the insurer issues the policy and the policy’s effective conditions are met.

If there is a Green Card, is extra insurance always unnecessary?

It depends on country scope, dates, limits and the product needed. The TR country code should not be crossed out, and the validity dates should cover the vehicle’s stay in Türkiye. Kasko, extended liability and roadside assistance should be assessed separately.
