What is Green Card Insurance?

Green Card Insurance is a type of mandatory insurance for foreign-plated vehicles traveling on international roads. This insurance provides protection against potential financial consequences of traffic accidents when a vehicle with a foreign country’s license plate intends to travel in other countries.

Scope of Green Card Insurance

Green Card Insurance covers damages that may be caused to third parties and/or property as a result of an accident. The coverage may vary from country to country, but generally includes the following situations:

  • Injuries that may be caused to other drivers or passengers
  • Material damages that may occur to other vehicles or property
  • Legal expenses arising from traffic accidents

It should be noted that Green Card Insurance only covers damages to third parties and does not include damages to your own vehicle.

How to Obtain Green Card Insurance?

Green Card Insurance is obtained from the official insurance companies of the country where the vehicle is registered. The owner of the vehicle should request the Green Card from the insurance company in their country. The insurance company will gather necessary information about the vehicle’s policy and issue the Green Card that will be valid during the vehicle’s travel abroad.

The duration of Green Card Insurance may vary depending on the destination country. It is essential to check the validity period of the policy before the planned trip.

Green Card Insurance and the European Union

Vehicle owners traveling between European Union member countries are not required to obtain Green Card Insurance. The “Green Card System” valid among these countries does not require separate insurance policies at border crossings. However, for travels to non-European Union countries, Green Card Insurance is mandatory.

Green Card Insurance is a compulsory insurance type for foreign-plated vehicles traveling abroad. This insurance covers damages that may be caused to third parties and reduces potential financial risks during international travels. Vehicle owners traveling between European Union member countries are exempt from this insurance requirement, but obtaining Green Card Insurance is essential for travels to countries outside the EU.
